France Tops List of Most Visited Countries in 2022, Global Travel Reduced by 34%

The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has released a report on the current statistics and country rankings in world tourism for the year 2022.

According to the report, the rate of global travel last year reduced by 34% when compared to pre-COVID 2019.

The report’s findings reveal that while the tourism sectors of some countries and regions are gradually returning to pre-pandemic levels, some other countries’ tourism sectors are yet to recover. In spite of this, 2022 recorded about 963 million tourist trips globally, with total tourist expenses amounting to about $1.12 trillion.

For specific country statistics, France was the most visited country last year, while the Mediterranean was the most popular region among tourists. Also, more tourists came from the USA than from any other country in the world, according to the report’s findings.

From the findings of the report, the 10 most visited countries by tourists in 2022 were:

France – 80 million
Spain – 71.6 million
USA – 50.8 million
Turkey – 50.4 million
Italy – 49.8 million
Mexico – 38.3 million
Great Britain – 30.5 million
Germany – 28.4 million
Greece – 27.8 million
Austria – 26.2 million

The Statistics also show that last year, 67% of tourists globally preferred to visit European countries. 16% of tourists chose to go to North America, 10% to Asia, 7% went to the Middle East, and 5% visited Africa.

Countries that produced the most number of travelers and international tourists were:

USA – 114,900 million people. (about one-third of the country’s population)
China – 114.8 million people out of a population of 1.4 billion people.
Germany – 89.4 million
France – 47.7 million
Italy – 26.3 million
Canada – 24.4 million
Spain – 21.4 million
Russia – 20.3 million
South Korea – 19.9 million
Ukraine – 19.8 million

Global revenues from tourism in 2022 amounted to $1.12 trillion, with an average tourist spend of $1,051. The countries with the highest average tourist spend were:

Great Britain – $2,232
Germany – $1,108
Spain – $1,017
Italy – $890
France – $850 – 900
Turkey – $816
Austria – $732
Mexico – $731
Greece – $669
